A presentation on
dinosaurs
Millions of years
ago, when man did not exist yet, the Earth was peopled with strange creatures.
They have been called "dinosaurs", which means "terrible
lizards". We know them thanks to the fossils that we found.
There were many
kinds of dinosaurs and we all gave them funny names sometimes very difficult to
pronounce! The fossils allow us to know the way of life of each kind of
dinosaur.
The shape of the
jaws and teeth (or their absence) tells us what they were feeding on. It was
that powerful jaws and sharp teeth were needed to eat raw meat!
Dinosaurs that fed
on plants had to defend themselves against carnivorous attacks. Some lived in
flocks to protect each other, others were armed with natural defenses, solid
cuirass on the back, bony plates, prickles, horns, ... that allowed them to
resist.
If there were
gigantic dinosaurs, others, conversely, were no bigger than a chicken. Larger
dinosaurs are thought to move slowly because of their weight, while smaller
ones could run fast to escape predators or catch food.
Dinosaurs laid eggs
and also had to protect their nests from attacks by other dinosaurs that ate or
destroyed eggs. Were the dinosaur babies all cute and sweet? Small carnivores
already needed meat!
Dinosaurs are often
depicted with colors in shades of gray or green because they are thought to
camouflage themselves in the vegetation. But in truth, we do not know what
color they were. Why not a rainbow or dotted dinosaur?
No dinosaurs flew or
swam. But at the time there were huge flying reptiles and huge marine reptiles.
65 million years
ago, dinosaurs disappeared from the planet. A comet rain or a huge meteorite is
thought to have hit the Earth. This would have caused sudden climate change, a
cloud of dust, fires, which the dinosaurs would not have resisted. But the
extinction of the dinosaurs is still very mysterious. Extraterrestrial
invasion, volcanic eruptions all over the planet, the appearance of poisonous
plants or small egg-eating mammals, the cooling of the climate that would have
destroyed the vegetation, ... What is your personal theory?
In the meantime,
have fun watching the people you know. Which dinosaurs do they look like? I
think I look like a parasaurolophus. Yes, yes, I assure you. And what dinosaurs
do you look like?
When did the dinosaurs
live?
The first dinosaurs
appeared around 230 million years ago. If you want to get an idea of what this
represents, say that the man appeared there is "barely" 4.5 million
years! Dinosaurs reigned supreme over the land for 160 million years.
What did the
dinosaurs eat?
To know what was the
food of the dinosaurs, paleontologists first look at the jaw and the teeth of
the skeletons found!
In your opinion,
what was eating this dinosaur?
His teeth are long
and pointed: this Tyrannosaurus was carnivorous, that is, he ate meat. The
Tyrannosaurus is the dinosaur with the longest teeth: they could reach 30 cm
high! He was able to eat 120 kg of meat per meal, the equivalent of 6 children!
Brrr it's cold in the back ....
But there were also
herbivorous dinosaurs, who ate plants, leaves, and so on. For example the
Brachiosaurus, with its long neck that served to reach the leaves at the top of
trees. He was the biggest dinosaur: 12 meters tall! To get an idea of its size,
you can compare with a human being:
Where are the
dinosaurs now?
The dinosaurs
disappeared 65 million years ago. Why ? Scientists believe that a very large
meteorite crashed on Earth and that it had several deadly consequences for
dinosaurs: tidal waves, cold weather, volcanic eruptions, etc. ! If this
meteorite had not fallen, dinosaurs might populate Earth today, who knows?
THE HISTORY OF
DINOSAURS
WHAT ARE DINOSAURS?
The word
"dinosaur" comes from "dinosauria" which means
"terrible lizard" (of will know: "lizard" and deinos:
"formidable, terrible").
The dinosaurs lived
and dominated the Earth during the secondary era, from - 225 to - 64 million
years ago. They are divided into two groups: the saurischiens, who have a pool
like crocodiles and lizards, and the ornithischiens who have a pool close to
that of birds. They are reptiles, they are vertebrates, with pulmonary
respiration, at variable temperature and with a body covered with scales
composed of keratin. Contrary to what one thinks, it did not exist that
gigantic and ferocious dinosaurs, but also species of very small size, only a
few centimeters.
AGE OF DINOSAURS
Dinosaurs appeared
225 million years ago, on an Earth that was covered with forests, dusty plains
and seas.
At that time, it was
on Earth much hotter than today. There were no flowers, no birds, no mammals.
Dinosaurs reigned supreme.
The earliest
dinosaurs were reptiles that fed on trees and shrubs. Their skin was covered
with scales, they are the ancestors of crocodiles and snakes that we know
today.
Dinosaurs are the
largest animals that have populated the Earth. There were a hundred species of
dinosaurs, some gigantic, others not bigger than a hen. All species did not
exist at the same time.
DISTINGUISHING 3
LARGE PERIODS IN THE DINOSAURS ERA:
The TRIAS: period
between -248 and -208 million years which marks the appearance of the first
dinosaurs. The climate on Earth was then dry and hot.
JURASSIQUE: period
between -208 and -146 million years, during which lived the largest dinosaurs
and where appeared the first birds. The vegetation was then lush on Earth.
CRETACE: period
between -146 and -65 million years, marked by the extinction of the dinosaurs.
It was a period of diversification of dinosaur species.
The whole period
during which dinosaurs lived is called "the age of reptiles". It is
called the MESOZOIC. It includes the three periods mentioned above.
WHAT HAVE WE FIND
DINOSAURS?
There are only bones
left of these giants. Since then, their skin and organs have completely
decomposed. There are also sometimes teeth and claws. These remains have
fossilized over time, that is to say, embedded in the rock. Little by little,
the researchers (known as paleontologists) recompose the skeleton of the
dinosaurs from these fragments. It's a long and painstaking job.
DINOSAURS CARNIVORES
Some dinosaurs were
herbivores, other carnivores. Those who ate meat also hunted other dinosaurs.
As soon as he had captured prey, he rushed to eat it because the flesh had a
strong smell that attracted other carnivorous dinosaurs in search of food.
Some carnivorous
dinosaurs:
the Daspletosaurus
Albertosaurus
the Tyrannosaurus
the Tyrannosaurus
Rex (probably the biggest predator)
the Deinonychu
