THE COUGAR

Physical description
The cougar (or cougar), also known as cougar or mountain lion, is a large carnivorous mammal of the family Felidae. This big wild cat is distinguished from other felines by its plain coat that varies from gray to brown. It looks a lot like leopard, but without spots.
The cougar is between 1m and 2,30m long with a long tail of 60 to 70cm. It is dark at the end. The weight of the cougar oscillates between 35 and 120 kg. Males are larger than females.
The cougar has a slim and muscular body. His head is round. This one has two short and spread ears. With a posterior higher than the head, the animal can jump easily. It can run up to a speed of 72km / h.

His place of life
The cougar lives mainly in America, in very diverse habitats ranging from arid environments to mountains, plateaus, meadows and woodlands. This animal, declared a threatened species since the year 1973, would be today a extinct species in the United States.

His diet
The cougar is a carnivorous animal. It feeds on deer, mules, rodents, birds, lizards, etc. He hunts his prey cunningly. He spots them, approaches them quietly, then leaps at them. He kills them by pushing his teeth into their throats. The cougar is an excellent hunter. He often hunts alone at dusk and at dawn.

His reproduction
The cougar reaches sexual maturity at the age of 2 to 3 years. The mating period between male and female usually lasts two weeks. The period of gestation, meanwhile, lasts 90 days after which 3 or 4 young will be farrowed. The young have a birth weight between 600 and 800g. They are spotted at birth, but the spots gradually disappear over time. The female breastfeeds her young until the age of 3 months. However, they will remain at his side until the age of 2 years.

His life expectancy
A cougar lives about 8 to 10 years old. In captivity, it can survive up to 25 years.

The cougar's cry
Depending on the circumstances, the cougar meows, hisses, purrs, or whines.

Particular signs
The cougar's buck marks his territory with his urine, his claws or his excrement.
The cougar rarely attacks humans. He does this when the latter invades his wild territory or deprives him of his food.
