Poaching is to hunt or fish illegally
Poaching is the act of not respecting the
rules established for the control of hunting and fishing. The poacher will use
tools, lure, or hunt an animal while the hunting season is not open. Capturing
more than the allowable amount is poaching. Chasing females when only males can
be killed is still the act of poaching.
It is important to follow the hunting
rules, as they are often based on the current population of prey, and thus
ensure availability for the next hunting seasons. If females are not allowed to
hunt, the amount of females is not high enough to hunt them.
Before firearms and the proliferation of
our population, poaching was not really a big problem. The animals had a lot of
ground and chances against the less efficient means like the hunting rifle. The
capture of an animal at that time often meant the survival of his family. Now
it's for sports and trophies.
Poaching exists in industrialized
countries, but not as in Africa and other poor countries. In Africa, a poacher
will get several years of his meager salary for elephant tusks, a tiger skin,
even the hands of a gorilla. It is difficult for this poacher to resist hunting
protected animal species.
The use of weapons, lures, or tools prohibited
for hunting or fishing is also poaching. For example, it is often forbidden to
use live lures, such as minnows for fishing. Hunting at night with a flashlight
is illegal because the animal freezes as hypnotized by light. Again the battle
is lost for the animal that freezes on the spot.
Poaching pays off for those who do it,
because people buy their prey or products. A person who wants to have a lion
skin in his living room will pay the price to shoot the last lion, because he
can pay for it. That the race is threatened only raises prices for them, when
the race is gone, it will be worth more.
The battle for the survival of animals is
far from over. More and more animal species are in danger of extinction. The
expansion of cities, changes in their environment ... and of course poaching
will deprive us of many animal breeds that can not, without our help, survive.
