Biography Avicenna

A philosopher and Persian-speaking physician, Avicenna (whose real name is Ibn Sina) was born into the family of an official of the Samanid dynasty. His father is a Shia Muslim and his mother is probably Jewish. Early on, he shows provisions for study and medicine.

By relying on the treatises of Aristotle, he acquired a great mastery of the natural sciences, medicine and philosophy. He also performs ministerial functions with the emirs of the region, an occupation that is not without risk and requires him several times to flee or hide.

Aristotle's comments by Avicenna will inspire Western thinkers of the scholastic school, such as St. Thomas Aquinas. The influence of Avicenna will remain less, however, than that of Averroes, another Muslim scholar but of Arabic language and native of Spain.

Avicenna will mainly influence Muslim and Western medicine until the sixteenth century with his major work: the Canon of Medicine (Kitab Al Qanûn fi Al-Tibb). It will be translated into Latin by Gerard Cremona shortly after his death.
