Avicenna
Avicenna and his hold on later thought,
both in the land of Islam and in the West.
One of the biggest names in Islamic
philosophy. Avicennism is at the crossroads of Eastern thought and Western
thought.
Biography
This Iranian doctor and philosopher, who
was also an ardent Aristotelian, exerted a great influence on medieval thought
and prepared the medical discoveries of the Renaissance. Extremely talented for
medicine, at age 17 he healed the Prince of Bukhara, who opened his library. In
his Canon of Medicine, which he began writing very young, he summarizes
Hippocrates and Galen by adding his personal impressions. He had noticed that
tuberculosis and dysentery were contagious. A frequent traveler, he had also
discovered not only that polluted water was responsible for dysentery, but that
"impurities could be separated from water" by boiling it. His book
was translated from Arabic1 to Latin in the 15th century, and widely
disseminated in Europe until the 17th century. It is first through the writings
of Avicenna that the Middle Ages rediscovered the Greeks. In the Renaissance,
doctors went directly to the sources. (G.C.)
1. Note that since Iran was invaded by
the Arabs, all Iranian writers and philosophers wrote most of the time in the
Arabic language except Avicenna, who wrote her two books Canun and Sh'afa in
Persian. These books were then translated into Arabic.
