Saladin or Salâh al-Dînn 'born in 1138 in Takrit (Iraq) and died in Damascus (Syria) in 1193. This is the first Ayyubid sultan. The Ayyubid dynasty is one of the dynasties of the Muslim world, it ruled in the twelfth century Egypt, Syria, part of Iraq and Arabia. Saladin is the Muslim leader who took over Jerusalem in 1187.

Youth of Saladin

Saladin is said to have come from a large Arabic-speaking Kurdish family who had emigrated to Syria. As it is the family tradition he enters the service of Nûr al-Din (or Nourédine) governor of Aleppo. Saladin accompanies his uncle Nouredine charged with restoring order in Egypt, then ruled by the Fatimid caliphs. In 1169, after his uncle, Saladin became the vizier (prime minister) of the caliph. In 1171, Saladin overthrew the caliph and took the title of sultan (warlord) and placed himself under the (weak) authority of the Abbasid caliphs of Baghdad (rivals of the Fatimids of Cairo).

Saladin only master

In 1174, Saladin took advantage of Noureddine's death to eliminate his rivals. He seized Syria, which he attached to Egypt (at the same time as part of Iraq and Syria).

He resumed the Holy War against the Frankish kingdoms settled in the Middle East. In 1187, Saladin took Jerusalem, which has been in the hands of Christians since 1099 during the first crusade. Under his reign, although a convinced Sunni Muslim, he managed to balance the relationship between religions, and preserve the holy places of each worship. Jerusalem is at the time a city where coexist the three great monotheistic religions that are Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. For Christians, it is one of the most important holy places, the one where Jesus was crucified. Jerusalem is then in Muslim territory and the Muslims pray there in the mosque al-Aqsa in particular.

In the following years, Saladin must defend Jerusalem against the crusaders grouped in the Third Crusade. He makes an agreement with Richard the Lionheart king of England, who is at their head, for the access of Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem. Saladin retains Syria and Inner Palestine, while the Franks take over the Mediterranean coast of Palestine.

Saladin died in 1193, without any crusader having succeeded in taking Jerusalem back.

By his behavior towards his adversaries, Saladin is respected by the Christians and is often given like model of the good knight

Battle of Hattin

The Battle of Hattin (or Hittin) takes place on July 4, 1187 near Lake Galilee in Galilee. It opposes the army of Jerusalem led by King Guy Lusignan and that of Saladin. The latter, at the head of 1,200 soldiers, won the victory against the Jerusalem army (1,500 men). During the battle Saladin took the opportunity to kill with his hand his oldest enemy: Renaud de Chatillon.
