How to write a good article?
1. Find a good topic!
Find a good topic for your readers: something intriguing, exciting, fascinating! Something out of the ordinary, with, if possible, a renowned specialist's perspective.
2. Write for your readers, not for yourself
But above all, remember: you write for your readers, not for yourself! The reader should be your absolute guide, you should keep that in mind every step of the way. That's why I've highlighted topics that matter to readers in a cloud over this mindmap, to remind you (and me too) of the importance of readers.
3. Listen to your readers
How do you find a good topic for your readers? Listen to them! It has never been easier: Today everyone is expressing themselves on the Internet. Via social media, blog comments, etc.
Develop a watch, for example using a news aggregator like Feedly (there are many others).
4. Gather relevant information
This will help you gather relevant information. But also funny anecdotes, interesting points of view, unique testimonies on great events.
Things that will give flesh to your story.
5. Analyze your information
But gathering the information is not enough: you must also analyze it:
What is really relevant?
Are your witnesses really credible?
Are your details correct?
Cross-check and double-check your information.
6. Choose the right angle
Choose the right angle to tell your story. Are you going to take the point of view of the actor of history? That of a witness or a victim?
Are you going to compare this new situation to a previous one, to better highlight the differences?
The angle is extremely important: sometimes it is the only thing that will differentiate your paper from that of a competitor ...
7. Structure your paper
What structure are you going to give to your article? Will it be a funnel text, which starts from the most general information to the most specific detail? Are you going to write a timeline, which chronicles the events from first to last to set the context for a long saga? Or do you prefer an interview with a key figure that will allow you to illustrate the main points of the facts?
The structure that you give to your article is very important: depending on the form you choose, you can emphasize certain points, but sometimes also minimize or even hide others. Be careful !
8. Write your story
Write ! It's almost time, isn't it? Yes, now you can sit down at your desk and start typing ...
You will finally bring all of these pieces together into a cohesive and compelling story. Do it in style: avoid clichés, obscure expressions. Avoid jargon and specialist terms, which hardly anyone understands. Take care of your production, your reader is well worth it!
By the way, your reader is not your mom, so don't expect praise and compliments if your paper doesn't meet industry standards ... You've been warned.
9. Edit your text
After writing, edit your article. It's time to get rid of the spelling mistakes, to take care of the syntax. Correct awkward wording, cut out jargon or unclear expressions.
Try to be simple and elegant at the same time. It is best to have someone else edit them.
10. Publish your article!
And finally, publish your article! Choose the right channel. If you are a blogger, you have complete freedom. If you are a professional journalist, before you even write, choose the type of media you are going to write for. The rest - title, angle, structure, etc. - will be imposed on you, or at least discussed - by your editor-in-chief.
But either way, you'll have the pleasure of reading your text online or in print and getting feedback from your favorite readers (yes, your mom too!).
