WHAT IS HAPPY, WHAT IS HAPPINESS?

Ah, happiness ...

This article on happiness is incomplete and imperfect. To create a definition and a guide to be happy is to create a definition and a guide to live. I do not claim to have this knowledge and experience. Despite being incomplete and imperfect, this happiness article is deeply in line with my beliefs, skills, and what I observe in my life and the lives of my clients.

Good reading.

It's difficult to define happiness, we tend to define it by what it is not, by what makes it up, improves it or harms it, but it's difficult to stop at a definition which explains well this feeling so sought after.

So what is being happy and what is happiness?

My definition of happiness is as follows:

Happiness is a feeling of general satisfaction with my life, my overall situation at the moment and the direction in which I am moving, this overall and imperfect satisfaction is paired with a feeling that life is generally good, meaningful and useful for me.

Wikipedia definition of happiness: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonheur

Happiness is a lasting state of wholeness and satisfaction, a pleasant and balanced state of mind and body, from which suffering, stress, worry and turmoil are absent.

From the point of view of etymology, happiness is the culmination of a construction, which cannot be confused with fleeting joy.

Other definitions and synonyms:

MY WAY OF SEEING HAPPINESS

I partially agree with Wikipedia's definition. Where I like it less is with the fact that happiness is a state where suffering, stress, worry and trouble are absent. It is unrealistic to think of happiness as a lasting state of wholeness, contentment and serenity, and at the same time, a state uninhabited by suffering, stress, worry and turmoil. If so, it would be impossible to be happy.

For me, happiness is not an absolute state, it is a global, relative state in constant motion. I am rarely in a perfect state of happiness, as I am rarely in total unhappiness. Happiness is a full-width photo of my present life, of the direction and meaning I give to it that satisfies and fulfills me.

Happiness is large, imperfect and variable, like unhappiness elsewhere.

Happiness and unhappiness are not absolute, I repeat, there is an incredible variety of states of satisfaction and dissatisfaction and an endless amount of intensity with which to experience them. While I am generally satisfied with my life, I tend towards happiness, the reverse is also true for unhappiness.

Happiness does not require the absence of suffering, stress or difficulties. I would even say that aiming to eliminate suffering from our lives in the hope of being happy is the surest way to be unhappy, it is defensive behavior that breeds dissatisfaction. Knowing how to suffer for the right reasons and accepting that suffering is part of a healthy life is one of the characteristics of happy people.

Happiness is lived in the present moment, not that it comes as a surprise because it is the only one that exists, but it does not necessarily depend on what is happening in the present moment.

Like I said, happiness is a full-width photo of my present life, if I'm going through something difficult momentarily I'm still able to see the whole photo and still be happy. If, on the other hand, day by day, I am caught in difficulties and adversity, these states will have an impact on the full width photo of my life and on my happiness.

HERE IS A QUOTE ABOUT HAPPINESS THAT I LOVE SO MUCH.

“Happiness is not the absence of suffering. Happiness is unattainable if we believe that achieving it means living in an ideal world without imperfection, pain, suffering. This conception only exists in fairy tales. Moreover, it is illusory to believe that happiness will appear, as if by magic, after a moment of discomfort or a test of life. Ultimately, to believe that he would be present if the past had been different is to try to build a life on something that does not exist.
